D x plates were originally issued by Kent County Council, 2 D onwards was issued by them from 1964 onwards. 1 D was specifically reserved for someone but they failed to take it up by 1965 and it was later auctioned by DVLA.

Records aren't available as to what was registered by close of business on 2nd January 1904, but by the 24th June 1904 Kent County Council had registered 682 cars and 760 motorcycles.


D 1 was issued on 30th November 1903 to Dr Edward Groud, a surgeon who lived in Maidstone who registered it to a New Orleans. Three years later ownership had moved to John Colement, also of Maidstone.

The plate was in long term ownership with Mr Clarke of Fittenden in Kent who then moved to Somerset.

The plate is now owned by a London business and they bought it along with D 3 in 2012 for an undisclosed amount.


D 2 was issued to William Rosher of Upper Walmer who registered to his Marshall, but was cancelled within nine months. It was then issued to George Denne of Dean.

The plate was sold at auction in 2018 for £203K

The current owner is known and lives in the North of England.


D 3 was issued to Sir David Salomons and was registered to his Renault.

Sir David did quite well in obtaining early D's and managed to obtain D 3, D 4, D 5, D 6, D 7, D 8 and D 9

This plate is now owned by a London business.


D 4 was issued to Sir David Salomons and was registered to his Panhard. The plate was cancelled in 1905.

Current owner is known and lives in the North of England.


D 5 was issued to Sir David Salomons and was registered to his Richard-Brasier.

The plate changed ownership in 2018 when the current owner who lives in London paid £264K


D 6, assigned to the owners previous Mercedes ML for 15 years travelling 130K miles and never spotted. Owner buys a new GLE and assigns the plate and it's spotted within 3 days!


D 7 was assigned to a 1973 Rolls Royce Corniche in July 2009, this is now SORN.

Current owner is known and based in the Midlands.


D 8 was issued to Sir David Salomons and was registered to his De Dion.

Now owned by Douglas Park of Glasgow, they also own G 8 and P 7.


D 9 was issued to Sir David Salomons and registered to his Brouhot

Current owner is known and lives in the Midlands.


1 D was sold by DVLA in 2009 for £360K and bought by the current owner, who is known and based in the South East of England.


2 D is now in the London area.


3 D is currently a stock plate for a registration sales company.


4 D was bought by Nino Verrico in 1987 and he sold it that same year for £4,000 to Duncan Paul of Glasgow. At some point Mark Bailey in Swansea (of RS Bonkers Collection) bought it. It was sold on at a later date.

Current owner is known and lives in the South East of England.


7 D was owned by Mark Bailey in Swansea (of RS Bonkers Collection) and had it on his Veyron. The plate was sold in 2020, the owner is known and based in the North of England.


8 D

On the Golf since it was new.


9 D

On the DB7 since it was new, current owner is known and based in the South East of England.
