G x plates were originally issued by Glasgow Council , all x G plates are DVLA auction sales

By close of business on 2nd January 1904 Glasgow Council had registered 77 cars and 20 motorcycles.

G 0 is not an original issue, especially issued to sit on the Lord Provost of Glasgow vehicle, but only after the owner of G 1 refused to donate their plate to the council.

Before any of you ask how a council can afford to buy or lease a Rolls then worry no more, it was donated to them, and they sold it at a later date.

G 1 was originally issued to Robert Smith of Glasgow. He was an accountant and treasurer to the Scottish automobile club. In 1915 the Provost of Glasgow took delivery of an offical vehicle and wanted G 1 but the owner refused to hand over the plate, G 0 was issued as a result.

The black and white photo of the Citroen DS is from 1958.

In 2011 it's fairly likley that it was Gareth Gillespie of Scotland that sold the plate for £500K and it was subsequently sold twice more after this. Gareth also owned G 2, G 3, 4 G, 5 G and 6 G and it's thought these were all sold at roughly the same time.

The current owner is known and is based in Scotland.

They had built what is thought to be the largest private collection of 1x1's owing this plate and 1 through to 9 G, a total of ten 1x1's. In late 2021 they started selling them, starting with 9 G, then 8 G then all the way down to 4 G. They currently still owns G 1, 1 G, 2 G and 3 G.

G 3

G 4 is registered to a Bentley Brooklands. The 2009 vehicle was purchased by the current owner in June 2016 and the plate went on it then and since has covered less than 1,000 miles. I do have a photo of it but unfortunately it's so blurred you can only make out it's a Bentley and certainly not what the plate is.

G 5 was based in London for 20+ years but in 2021 was sold for ~£300K. The plate has now resurfaced in the South East of England.

G 6

Based in the Midlands area and thought to be family owned since original issue.

G 7
