Y x plates were originally issued by Somersetshire County Council, all x Y plates are DVLA auction sales
By close of business on 2nd January 1904 Somersetshire County Council had registered 121 cars and 64 motorcycles.
Y 1 was originally issued on 25th November 1903 to Arthur Thring of Bath and was registered to a Benz. Arthur was very involved in politics, and somehow managed to ensure he was allocated Y 1, Y 2 and Y 3. The Thring family transferred the plate from vehicle to vehicle but was allowed to lapse in the 1940's. It was revived by his daughter in law in 1953.
The Lamborghini Murcielago wearing the plate is from when Lamborghini London owned it, they sold it to a client in 2003 for a six figure sum.
The picture of Y 1 from the early 1900's was removed due to it being a picture of a Swedish plate. Thank you to the person who brought this to my attention.
Y 2 was originally issued on 25th November 1903 to Arthur Thring of Bath and was registered to a Benz. At some point it was transferred to a local farmer who one day had an accident and that was the last seen of the plate.
It's seen here on a 1939 De Dion Bouton that is displayed at London's Science Museum. It's not known if the plate is transferable.
Y 3 was originally issued on 25th November 1903 to Arthur Thring of Bath and was registered to a Benz. It was allowed to lapse in 1906. In 1910 it was reissued to Sir George Neville who registered it to a Mercedes. It's now registered to a vintage 1921 Mercedes, and I suspect is non transferable.
Y 4 is a confirmed lost plate.
Y 5
On the Mercedes since 2008.
Y 6 was originally issued on 28th November 1903 to Charles Wood of Frome and registered to a Oldsmobile. At some point it was allowed to lapse and was reissued in 1914 to A Cousins.
Y 6 was sold at auction in June 2022 for £219K and the owner is known and based in the South East of England.
Y 7 is a confirmed lost plate.
Y 8 was originally issued on 1st December 1903 to Richard Combe of Taunton and registered to a Gardner-Serpollet. He also owned Y 7.
The owner is known and based in the North of England.
This picture gets a special mention. It was taken in 1905 in Taunton and is most likely Richard Combe, the original owner.
Y 9 was originally issued on 1st December 1903 to Francis Fox and registered to a Century.
The plate changed hands in early 2024 for ~£275K. The previous owner also owned Y 6 and owned them both since the 1960's.
The current owner is known and lives in the North of England.
1 Y was sold by DVLA in 1996 for £16K. In late 2023 the plate was sold for an undisclosed sum.
