J 5 - J 9 - As complete as it's going to get

2 J - 3 J - 4 J - 5 J - 6 J - 7 J - 8 J - 9 J

J x plates were originally issued by Durham County Council, all x J plates are DVLA auction sales

By close of business on 2nd January 1904 Durham County Council had registered 65 cars and 32 motorcycles.

J x is unusual and shows a lack of plates. Why is this? My suggestion is that as time went on DVLA realised there was a clash with Jersey plates so at some point they decided not to do any £5 re-issues.

J 1 is a confirmed lost plate. Previously a Rolls Royce was shown with this number, but this was proven to be a Jersey plate.

J 2 is a confirmed lost plate.

J 3 is a confirmed lost plate.

J 4 is a confirmed lost plate.

J 5 is registered to a 1904 Pope Hartford. This vehicle was purchased by the owner in 2004 at auction and was part of an American car collection. When it was registered with the DVLA they assigned it with J 5 but also marked it as non transferable.

The current owner is known and based in the North of England.

J 6 is a confirmed lost plate.

J 7 is a confirmed lost plate.

J 8 is a confirmed lost plate.

J 9. Although there isn't much information on this plate I have ascertained it was a re-issue by DVLA as a replacement for P 9 but unsure as to why.

Until late 2022 it was owned by Jay Rutland, although it's unknown when he bought it. The new owner is known and based in the North of England.

It's the only transferable right way round J plate.

1 J was sold by DVLA in 1995 for £76K. It was briefly registered to a Rolls Royce Azure in November 1995 but unsure when it was removed.

2 J was sold by DVLA in 1994 for £9K

The current owner is known and based in the North of England.

3 J was sold by DVLA in 1997 for £10K

4 J was sold by DVLA in 1993 for £8K

The current owner is known and based in the North of England.

5 J was sold by DVLA in 1994 for £13K

6 J was sold by DVLA in 1994 for £7K

Unable to establish how long they've owned it but I do know who currently owns this and they are based in the North of England.

7 J was sold by DVLA in 1993 for £7K

8 J was sold by DVLA in 1992 for £8K. Current owner is known and based in London.

9 J was sold by DVLA in 1995 for £9K.

Owner is based inthe South East of England.
