X x plates were originally issued by Northumberland County Council, all x X plates are DVLA auction sales
By close of business on 2nd January 1904 Northumberland County Council had registered 75 cars and 34 motorcycles.
X 1 was originally to John Williamson of Tynemouth. He transferred the plate onto various vehicles but after WW1 he allowed the plate to lapse. In the 1950's his son Davis revived the plate and when he dies it was passed to his wife. When she died in 1974 it was left to David's business partner John Jackson.
The plate was bought by a person who owned a company with X 1 in the name, it was bought at auction for a sum in excess of £500K and subsequently changed hands after this.
The current owner is known and based in the South West of England.
Taken in 1976
X 2 was originally issued to John Todd of Tynemouth. He transferred it from vehicle to vehicle but left it lapse in the 1930's. It was revived by the family in the 1960's and remained in family ownership until Alex Jackson bought it in 1992
Plate put onto Retention in May 2021
X 3
X 4 was originally issued to John Robinson of Tynemouth.
The current owner lives in the North of England.
Taken in 1975
X 5
Looks to be have been on the Daytona since 1985 when Graham Cook of Guilford had already owned the Daytona for five years. The plate, with the Daytona attached, was sold to an investor in 2016. In October 2021 Tom Hartley Junior bought not only the Plate but also the Daytona (I suspect he was after the car....). Two months later both were sold on again.
My information is that both were sold on at least once more, if not twice.
X 6
The plate was removed from the Range Rover in November 2019 and is now dealer stock.
X 7
This plate was previously on a Dodge Ram and wasn't spotted for 8 years. It's then spotted within 24 hours of going on the Bentley but I suspect the plate was sold at time of transfer. Transpires this suspicion was correct, it was sold for ~£310K in the Autumn of 2021.
So, 18 months after it was sold I finally see a picture of the Dodge. Better late than never.
X 8 was originally issued to Maurice Portal of Hexham
X 9 is a confirmed lost plate.
1 X was sold by DVLA in 1996 for £33K.
2 X was sold by DVLA in 2009 for £56.5K
3 X was sold by DVLA in 1993 for £6K
Although on a Ferrari 550 that does an extremely low mileage, in 2020 it was spotted in Iain Tyrrell's classics restoration garage in Chester. Unfortunately they have failed to respond to a request for any further information.
The plate was placed on the car within two weeks of first registration is 1998.
4 X was sold by DVLA in 1991 for £15K
Was last registered to a Skoda Fabia in March 2017
5 X was sold by DVLA in 1993 for £9K
Unable to confirm but it looks like the plate was assigned at new. Don't expect to see this often as it's 32 year old XJ220 with sub 4,500 miles, only 500 of these were covered in the past 20 years. This picture was taken in 1996
6 X was sold by DVLA in 1993 for £6K.
It was sold more recently in 2019 at Bonhams auction and sold for ~£129K
7 X was sold by DVLA in 1994 for £6K.
The current owner lives in London.
8 X was sold by DVLA in 1992 for £4K
Gary Oddy from West Yorkshire bought the plate selling it in 1998.
The then owner obviously liked their Silver Porsches. Shortly before a recent sale it was on an owned since new 1974 silver 911 with a shade over 13K miles
Sold in September 2021 at Bonhams for £198K
9 X was sold by DVLA in 1994 for £7K
