S x plates were originally issued by Edinburgh Borough Council, all x S plates are DVLA auction sales

By close of business on 2nd January 1904 Edinburgh Borough Council had registered 20 cars and 4 motorcycles.

S 0 is issued to the Lord Provosts of Edinburghs vehicle. It's not unknown when this was issued but after failing to persuade the owner of S 1 to part with it, S 0 was issued, this happened sometime between 1905 and 1915.

S 1 was originally issued to Dr William Clark of of Edinburgh. He only got it as Lord Adam (Senator of the college of judiciary of Scotland who had reserved it, failed to register it. In 1905 the Scottish Atomobile Club was formed and its president wasn't too pleased having missed out on the plate. An "arrangement" was made and William swapped it for S 2. Later the Lord Provost of Edinburgh put pressure on John to part with S 1 but he was having none of it.

The plate was sold at Bonhams auction in 2008 for a sum in excess of 400K

S 2 was originally issued to John McDonald and probably registered to his Delahaye. It was John who did the deal to exchange S 2 for S 1.

On the Mercedes SL since July 2015.

S 3 was originally issued to James Ivory, an accountant and at one point a director at Standard Life Assurance Ltd. He transferred the plate from vehicle to vehicle until nhis death in 1939. He then passed to his Son and is still retained within the family

Placed on a 2013 Freelander when it was a month old and only removed this year. The vehicle covered 130,000 miles and wasn't spotted in those 8 years, yet within days of going on the Discovery it gets spotted!! Within weeks on receiving the picture of the Discovery I was sent a picture of the Freelander.
