L x plates were originally issued by Glamorganshire County Council, all x L plates are DVLA auction sales
By close of business on 2nd January 1904 Glamorganshire County Council had registered 43 cars and 62 motorcycles.
L 1 was issued in 1904 and was owned by Oliver Jones who was a barrister and local JP and lived in Fonmon Castle in Glamorgan in South Wales. Upon his death in 1917 the transferred to his Wife and upon her death in 1932 it was gifted to their niece, and it was Lady Clara Boothby who gifted it to Glamorgan County Council.
Despite the local history and generous donation the Glamorgan County Council saw fit to sell the plate in 1998 and it's currently displayed on a Maybach.
Owned by a Qatari royal based in London, the same family also own 1 R and S 8. The plate was placed on the car in early 2010.
L 2 wasn't issued until 1905, sometime later it lapsed.
It was revived in the 1950's and placed on an Austin A40. After remaining untaxed for several years it was discovered by Nick Young who bought it for £500. He sold the plate in 1972 for £1,500

This 1909 Cadillac Demi Tonneau, came to the current owner, who is known, and based in the South East of England in late 2023. They are just the fifth owner.
Fred Bennett, the UK Cadilac agent in the early 1900's, bought the vehicle in 1910 when it was registered EL 671 (it was first registered A 7368). It's thought L 8 was transferred onto the vehicle in ~1920. Fred kept the vehicle until 1932/3 when he sold it to General Motors. It was transported to the USA and was housed in the General Motors museum until the late 1950's. It did return to the UK in 1960/61 for a short period and during this time it was taxed.
In 1979/80 it returned to the UK permanently.
L 9 was reissued to the 9th Lord Langford of Denbighshire in 1955 as it hadn't been registered for 34 years and was placed on his Bentley. It remained on it for 50 years before transfer to his Lexus. The car and plate were passed to the 10th Lord Langford in 2017.
The plate is now back on the Bentley since late 2022.
