R x plates were originally issued by Derbyshire County Council, all x R plates were issued by them in 1960

By close of business on 2nd January 1904 Derbyshire County Council had registered 105 cars and 49 motorcycles.

R 1 was originally issued to Captain Herbert Holland of Ashbourne and registered to a Beaufort. He was a Captain in the Army, a Magistrate and Chief Constable of Derbyshire.

The plate is now in the Bristol area.

R 2 was originally issued to Marcus Astle of Draycott and registered to a Napier. Within a week of the registration act coming into force he was elected a Magistrate.

The plate is now owned by Vijay Ravat of Leicester.

R 3

R 4 was sold to Ernest Clarke of Beverly six months after original issue for one shilling. A mere nine months later it was sold to Herbert Cherry of Beverly.

The plate now belongs to Arthur Revolta who has it on a 1970 VW Beetle, he also owns V 2 (also on a Beetle).

This VW Beetle looks like it was imported in 1983 but I m unable to determine if the plate was placed on it then or in January 1999. Either way I know where it is, that it s parked right next to V 2, and am currently awaiting permission to photograph it so I can show you a better picture of the plate.

R 5

Appears to be on the car since 1994 but it changed ownership in 2018.

R 6

Ronald Ludkin of Surrey bought a car in the 1950's with the plate on it. He kept the plate and when he died in 1984 it passed to his Wife Iris. She used the plate until 2009 when she had an accident and decided it was time to stop driving. The Volvo 340GL (remember those?) was a write off and was parked up. When she died in 2015 it was established that to remove the plate from the Volvo it had to have an MOT, so it was repaired and MOT'd.The plate was auctioned at Bonhams and sold for ~160K.

I have established who the current owner is.

Appears to be on the car since 1994 but it changed ownership in 2018.

R 8

The picture of the plate on the Renault 5 was when it belonged to Rob Waler of Frome, Somerset.

R 9

1 R was owned by Derbyshire County Council but they sold it in 1990 for a sum believed to between 50-60K.

Owned by a Qatari royal, the same family also own L 1 and S 8

Sold at auction in the spring of 2023 for £336K

In 2017 it was sold to someone in the Windsor area. In 2022 someone in Birmingham bought the plate.
