M x plates were originally issued by Cheshire County Council, all x M plates are DVLA auction sales

By close of business on 2nd January 1904 Cheshire County Council had registered 143 cars and 76 motorcycles.

M 1 was originally issued on 14th December 1903 to Maurice Egerton of Rosthere Manor, Knutsford, who later became the 4th Baron Egerton of Tatton. He had it placed on his green Darracq Tonneau. He travelled and had planned to settle in Africa but returned to the UK in the 1920's. In 1924 he bought a 1900 Benz and had it restoed and it was this car he transferred M 1 to and it remained part of the estate until it was sold at Bonhams in 2006 for £331,500, the proceeds of which went towards the upkeep of Tatton Park. Before the 2006 sale, the plate had been on the same vehicle for 80 years, a 1900 Benz. It was bought at auction by Michael McCoomb of Cheshire as a present for his then 6 year old son.

Placed on the Bentley when they bought it in April 2016.

M 2, originally issued to John Antrobus of Eaton Hall,Congleton and assigned to a blue Wolesley.

The plate was removed from the Urus in November 2019 and is now owned by a plate dealer.

M 3, originally issued to John Dickson of Ningwood and assigned to a MMC.

Assigned to this Winton sometime since 2012, but removed before 2019.

M 4, originally issued to Edgar Billson of Holylake and assigned to a De Dion Bouton. Just six weeks later the car and plate were sold to Brooks Wood of Holygate.

Plate was transferred onto the Range Rover when it was new in March 2017.

M 6, originally issued to William Brodie of Liscard and assigned to a R&P motorbike. During the next 18 months it was transferred onto two other motorbikes. In December 1912 the plate was cancelled.

Plate was placed on the Fiesta in February 2009 and family owned for 50+ years. Sold in early 2023.

M 7, originally issued to William Brodie of Liscard and assigned to a R&P motorbike. During the next 18 months it was transferred onto two other motorbikes. In December 1912 the plate was cancelled.

It's pictured here in 1964 on a Ford Cortina Ogle GT replica. Looks like the picture was taken in Londons Berkeley Square.

In June 1984 the owner placed it on their TR7 which hasn't been MOT'd since at least 2005.

M 8, originally issued to John Morris of Altrincham and assigned to a car built by Lanchester Engine Co, three years later it was transfered to his new car, a Belsize.

M 9, originally issued to William Rowcliffe of Fallowfield and assigned to a Red Clement. The plate was cancelled in July 1911.
