1 U - 2 U - 8 U - 9 U - As complete as it's going to get

U x plates were originally issued by Leeds County Borough Council, all x U were issued from 1957 onwards

At the end of the first week of registration Leeds had registered 81 cars and 37 motorcycles.

U 1 was originally issued to Arthur Briggs of Leeds (who was Lord Mayor) and registered to a Lancaster, but only after U 1 was reserved by someone else. A deal was done and U 1 was effectively swapped for U 2 and three other registrations. When his time as Mayor came to an end he took U 1 with him and it was transferred from car to car. He died in 1906 and the plate passed to his wife who continued to use it until her death in 1936.

It was then offered to Leeds City Council by her daughter as per their wishes. It now resides on the Mayors car.

U 2 was originally issued to Rowland Winn and in 1923 he allowed the plate to lapse.

In the early 1970's U 2, U 4 and U 6 were owned by someone in North London.

The plate is now in the North of England area.

U 3 was originally issued to George Walker and registered to a De Dion. In 1946 the plate was owned by S Jackson of Ilkley and was on a Hudson.

U 4 - Originally assigned to a Dennis fire engine.

Now on a Mercedes 450SEL (no, not the 6.9 litre version) - Current owner became the 5th owner of this 1976 Mercedes in March 1989 and looks to have placed U 4 on it in December 1997. Average annual mileage has now dropped to 50 miles pa so don't expect a picture anytime soon.

U 5 - Was last assigned to a VW Polo in December 1998 and removed in November 2006, since then it's sat on retention and it's confirmed it does still exist.

U 6

U 7 was originally issued to Bernal Bagshawe and registered to a Napier. When he died the plate passed to his wife who allowed it to lapse in 1937.

Owned since new in 1985 it looks like the plate was assigned when new. It was MOT'd only twice since 2005, in 2013 and again in 2020, and it was just after the last MOT that the owner removed the plate in December 2020.

U 8 was originally issued to Charles Wilson. The plate was cancelled in 1938.

It's unknown when it came into the ownership of the Earl of Harewood, but he sold it in April 2019 by Bonhams and sold for £167K. It was sold on in 2020 and is now in the North of England area.

Taken in 1982

U 9 was originally issued to John Whiting.

Current owner is known and based in London.

1 U was originally issued to a Piatti and changed hands several times.

In the 1960's it was offered to Leeds Council to pair it with U 1 but they declined. In 1966 it was bought by a gentleman who passed it to his Son in time, and he subsequently passed it to his Son.

Current owner is known and based in the North of England.

Taken in 1979
