W x plates were originally issued by Sheffield County Borough Council, all x W plates are DVLA auction sales
By close of business on 2nd January 1904 Sheffield County Borough Council had registered 65 cars and 32 motorcycles.
In early 2023 I was sent this picture. I researched it as time allowed and later in the year I was sent a copy of an advert from 1972 for it. Shortly after I was able to identify the current owner who is based in the Midlands.
W 2 was originally issued on 1st December 1903 to Harold Fielding and registered to a Alldays. The plate was cancelled a mere nine months later.
W 3 was originally issued on 28th December 1903 to Frederick Warlow and registered to a Piepier. The plate was cancelled in 1907
In 1968 it was purchased for £340 and just prior to 1973 it was owned by Ken Barley, who then swapped it with Noel Woodall for K 2
W 4 was originally issued on 21st December 1903 to Alfred Thompson and registered to a Clement. What I didn't know until recently was that it was family owned until at least the mid 90's
Rajin Mehta of London sold the plate in 2020.
Taken in 1992 when Jean-Philippe Reynard owned it.

W 6 was originally issued on 21st December 1903 to Christopher Leng and registered to a HP White Steam Phaeton. It's first transfer was a mere nine months later and he owned the plate until 1921.
In the late 70's it belonged to the original autonumerologist, legend, the man himself, the late Noel Woodall. Here it is on his then Opel Ascona.

W 7 is a confirmed lost plate.
W 8 is a confirmed lost plate.
W 9 - Registered to a 1997 Bentley Azure. It looks like the owner purchased the 1997 Azure new and placed the plate on it shortly afterwards.
